It's no secret that the wealthy divorce almost as often (or more often) than those who are less privileged. However, considering divorce in your eighties after 67 years of marriage is a big step. For one woman in Palm Beach, Florida, that's exactly the step she's taking, leaving Palm Beach spellbound by the news.
Burton Handelsman, who nearly single-handedly owns most of the real estate on Worth Avenue, a very ritzy part of Palm Beach, recently had divorce papers served to him on behalf of his wife of 67 years. Lucille “Lovey” Handelsman accused her husband of engaging in an affair with his attorney and cites other irreconcilable differences.

Lucille “Lovey” Handelsman accused her husband of engaging in an affair with his attorney and cites other irreconcilable differences.
The accused affair partner, Jane Rankin, is the real estate attorney for Mr. Handelsman. She issued a statement to the allegations from her Palm Beach officer, stating: “I have no comment on anything. I couldn't respond to anything as ridiculous. I wish the best to all parties involved.”
Since the couple began with a modest lifestyle and owing to the length of the marriage, Lovey could be entitled to at least half of the couple's real estate empire. Handelman has yet to file a financial affidavit in the divorce, so the couple's net worth is unclear. It could take quite a while. Their real estate holdings include having luxury stores like Cartier, Chanel, and Ralph Lauren. The Ralph Lauren store alone was recently appraised at $13 million, and that’s just one shop. |
Fortunately for Burton, Lovey has only demanded the couple's 2,000 square foot apartment on Worth Avenue, which has been retrofitted to accommodate her disabilities. Handelman argues that the apartment also serves as his business offices and he continues to work long hours while attending to Lovey’s disabilities.
For now, Lovey's attorneys are poring over financial documents, trying to calculate how much she should receive from a divorce settlement.
More and more elderly couples are divorcing in their later years. Some of these divorces involve huge sums of money. Others don’t. But gray divorces are common among the Baby Boomer generation. Some of the reasons for this are common to all generations, such as changing hormones and differences in sex drives. Other problems include increasing medical needs, differences in retirement spending beliefs, and sometimes sheer boredom with being with someone for that long.
Regardless of your financial situation or your reasons for leaving, if you need a divorce, you need a family law attorney who can negotiate the laws. People who divorce near retirement age often have considerable sums of money that need careful analysis in divorce court. No one wants to work all their life and then suddenly have much of it taken away in a bad divorce settlement.
